Sustainability

what
land stewardship means to us

Picture
an indigenous focus
At our farm, land stewardship is deeply rooted in Indigenous values and principles. It's about honouring the land, respecting its natural cycles, and serving our community.
Here's what it means to us:

honouring the land
We view the land as a living entity deserving of respect and care. This perspective shapes our approach to farming and guides our interactions with the environment.

sustainable practices
  • Natural Harmony: Emulating Indigenous practices by working with the land’s natural rhythms, using methods that sustain and regenerate the earth.
  • Holistic Management: Incorporating traditional ecological knowledge to maintain the balance between land, plants, animals, and people.
biodiversity and sacredness
  • Preserving Biodiversity: Protecting and promoting diverse plant and animal species, recognizing each as a vital part of the ecosystem.
  • Sacred Spaces: Identifying and preserving areas of cultural and spiritual significance on the land.
community and education
Land stewardship is also about being of service to our community:
  • Cultural Sharing: Integrating Indigenous knowledge and practices into our farming methods and sharing this wisdom with our community.
  • Educational Outreach: Offering programs and workshops that teach sustainable practices and the importance of respecting the land, inspired by Indigenous teachings.
service and reciprocity
We believe in a reciprocal relationship with the land and our community:
  • Giving Back: Ensuring that our farming practices benefit the land and the people, contributing to the health and well-being of both.
  • Community Support: Providing fresh produce and resources to support local Indigenous communities and other groups in need.
future generations
Our commitment to land stewardship is about creating a legacy:
  • Intergenerational Responsibility: Recognizing our duty to preserve the land for future generations, guided by the principle of making decisions that will benefit the seventh generation to come.
  • Cultural Continuity: Upholding and passing down Indigenous traditions and practices that honour and sustain the land.
Land stewardship, with an Indigenous focus, means living in harmony with the earth, respecting its gifts, and ensuring that our actions serve both the land and our community. It’s about a profound relationship with nature, guided by principles of respect, reciprocity, and sustainability.

sustainability objectives

branches of sustainability

  1. Ecosystem approach to site planning, tree removal, water management, landscaping, site plan, construction management, dwelling design, building materials, mechanical and electrical systems, water conservation, exterior and interior finishes, renewable energy, maintenance and management.
  2. Maintain biodiversity, regeneration, and resilience, and improve land productivity and stewardship practices within the farm and island ecosystems.
  3. Implement best practices in a wide range of ecosystem outputs, including food, fibre, fuel, habitat, etc., as well as waste and greenhouse gases.
  4. To prolong the longevity of buildings, dwellings, and infrastructure, improve upon green building methods, carbon footprint, and clean maintenance practices.
  5. Support and utilize innovative research in the fields of energy and fuel.
  6. Our proposal aims to cultivate the human-to-human, human-to-nature, and human-to-animal connections in an empowering yet gentle way. By developing these connections, we can create a more sustainable and harmonious environment for all.

restoration
& resilience

Picture
This project represents a holistic approach to sustainable agriculture that integrates ecological stewardship, community engagement, and economic viability. We aim to leverage each property's natural resources and potential while respecting their inherent ecological integrity and creating lasting positive impacts on the environment, local communities, and agricultural industry in British Columbia that can be replicated throughout Canada and the USA.

Furthermore, agro-tourism, practicums, retreats, and educational programming will play integral roles in generating revenue streams and encouraging community engagement across both properties. By offering immersive experiences for visitors, including guided tours, hands-on practicums, and a plethora of educational workshops, we aim to demonstrate evolving sustainable agriculture practices, Indigenous knowledge, and proven environmental conservation principles.

These initiatives will contribute to the project's financial sustainability and serve as platforms for knowledge exchange, skill-building, and connections between urban, rural, and remote communities. The properties' natural beauty and cultural significance also make them ideal settings for hosting retreats, wellness programs, and events that promote holistic living and reconnecting with the land.

Through these diverse revenue streams, we envision creating dynamic and inclusive spaces that inspire positive change and foster a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of people, land, and food systems.

We acknowledge that we live, work, and play on the stolen, ancestral and traditional territories of the Straits Salish peoples on the Island called S,ḴŦAḴ in SENĆOŦEN, the language of the W̱SÁNEĆ peoples.

The name "Tsi Tesakotitsén:tha” was given to us by a Tuscarora Elder who has known Susheela since 1986 in Kahnawake (Kanien’kehá:ka Mohawk territory) and suggested we create the space for “The Place That Heals You”. The Kanien'kehá:ka spelling was provided to us by a dear friend who still lives in Kahnawake. We are honoured to use the name and would also welcome a SENĆOŦEN translation of the name to respect the land we’re on and the language of the W̱SÁNEĆ peoples.
